Trip report written by Albert Cama

Thursday July 3rd 2008

The day began at 8 am in Barcelona City. We left for Garraf Nature Park, looking for Mediterranean species. Before arriving to Garraf, we managed to see a couple of Alpine Swifts between several Common Swifts in Vallirana. Once in the forest of the mountains, we heard the first Sardinian Warblers, but they remained hidden in the bushes. Some Robins, Nightingales and Great Tits also surrounded us. After the visit to the forest, we moved south to the costal area of the Garraf Nature Park to visit some rocky habitats.

On the road from Sitges to Barcelona we saw our third species of swift; the Pallid Swift, flying over the seaside cliffs. In that area we also saw a young Mediterranean Shag with its typical white wing panels, some Yellow-legged Gulls, Crag Martins and a Blue Rock Thrush. After that we climbed up to Garraf Mountains where we saw more Blue Rock Thrushes, Linnets, and we finally managed to see Sardinian Warbler.

The last part of the morning trip occurred in the Llobregat Delta. This is a wetland near the Garraf Mountains and close to the Airport of Barcelona. In the Remolar Lagoon we saw some very interesting species in spite of the wind that suddenly appeared; Flamingo, Collared Pratincole, Audouin’s and Mediterranean Gulls, Black-winged Stilts with chicks, Avocet, Bar-tailed Godwit, Spotted Redshank, Green and Wood Sandpipers, some Fan-tailed Warblers flying against the wind, and Cetti’s Warbler was heard.

The trip finished at 1 pm at the Airport.
