A round-trip in the Ebro River lands, taking us through mountains, steppes and wetlands. A wide variety of the birds of Spain will be encountered during this 9 day-itinerary; many of them in their breeding habitats. This time of year is excellent for locating rare and skulky birds such as the Dupont's Lark, and we are also expecting good views of Lammergeier, Bonelli's Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Blue Rock Thrush, and Ortolan Bunting.

The mountains hold various unusual species such as Lammergeier, Griffon Vulture, Bonelli's Eagle, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Wallcreeper, Red-billed Chough, Alpine Chough, Citril Finch, Rock Thrush and Blue Rock Thrush. In the steppes we will see Stone Curlew, Montagu's Harrier, Lesser Kestrel, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Little Owl, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Red-legged Partridge, Roller, Bee-eater, Calandra Lark, Thekla Lark, and many more. The Ebro Delta is teeming with life in the summertime, and thousands of gulls, shorebirds, and herons are foraging in the open rice fields. Flamingo, Glossy Ibis, Little Bittern, Audouin's Gull, Collared Pratincole, Avocet and many other species are breeding in the delta, allowing for great views around the colonies.

ITINERARY:

DAY 1 - Rendezvous at the airport of Barcelona or Reus. Extended waiting time between arrivals will be spent birding in the nearby Llobregat Delta. Transfer to the village of Loporzano. Birding around the Guara mountains if time allows. Dinner and overnight at Boletas.

DAY 2 - Breakfast at the hotel. Morning visit to a nearby location for birds like Egyptian Vulture, Black Wheatear, Spectacled Warbler, Tawny Pipit, and Rock Sparrow. Transfer to the Hecho valley in the Pyrenees. Picnic lunch. Afternoon birding in the Hecho Valley. Birds here include Lammergeier, Egyptian Vulture, Golden Eagle, Red Kite, Black Woodpecker, Wallcreeper, Dipper, Grey Wagtail, Alpine Chough, Citril Finch, and Cirl Bunting. Dinner and overnight in the village of Siresa.

DAY 3 - Breakfast at the hotel. Birdwatching in the Hecho valley. Morning watch for Wallcreeper, Citril Finch and other mountain specialities. Picnic lunch. In the afternoon, a walk in selva de Oza with good chances of Lammergeier, Red-billed and Alpine Choughs, Yellowhammer, and Water Pipit. Also Marmot and Chamois. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 4 - Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to Belchite. Picnic lunch. Bird watching in the steppes of Monegros, Planerón and Belchite. Birds may include Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew, Little Owl, Bee-eater, and Roller. Dinner and overnight in Hotel Quinto in Belchite.

DAY 5 - Breakfast in hotel. Early morning watch for the rare and elusive Dupont's Lark. The rest of the morning we will spend bird watching in the steppes of Belchite. Picnic lunch. Transfer to the nature park of Els Ports. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in the village of Bot.

DAY 6 - Breakfast in hotel. Birdwatching in the mountains of Els Ports, where we may see various raptors as well as Rock Thrush, Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, and also the rare Spanish Ibex. Late afternoon transfer to the Ebro Delta. Dinner and overnight in the Ebro Delta.

DAY 7 - Breakfast in hotel. Bird watching in the northern part of the delta. Most of the migratory breeding birds have arrived by now, including Littel Bittern, Collared Pratincole, Gull-billed Tern, and Great Reed Warbler. Also Flamingo, Great White Egret, Glossy Ibis, Red-crested Pochard, Red-knobbed Coot, and Moustached Warbler. Picnic lunch. Dinner and overnight in Hotel Llansola.

DAY 8 - Breakfast in hotel. Bird watching in the southern part of the delta. We expect to see Avocet, Audouin's Gull, Slender-billed Gull, Gull-billed Tern, Whiskered Tern, Lesser Short-toed Lark, and Reed Bunting. Also good chances of Bittern. Traditional lunch in restaurant La Tancada. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.

DAY 9 - Breakfast in hotel. A short visit to Montsià for Bonelli's Eagle if time allows. Departure from Barcelona or Reus airport.
